This is why homesteads fail in 6 years or less
Oct 10, 2021Did you know that most homesteads fail in 6 years?
two years of "honeymoon"
Two years of trying to fix everything that's broken
one year of giving up
one year to sell it.
When you think about your homestead if you're like me you look at what's working and what's not working. You look at what you can see and that is generally it.
You see you need to pull weeds.
Your chickens aren't laying eggs
Or your Milk cow has something wrong with her back quarter.
Most homesteaders that we talk with are always trying to fix these immediate problems. They look outside one cool morning and think to themselves this is not what I want my homestead to look like.
So for the rest of the day, there's a ton of energy put into cleaning up
Or something else like buying more animals
Or the worst one yet a giant vet bill on that animal you just can't let go.
Then they get worn out and or broke and can't do it anymore.
I think that's because we homesteaders are somewhere between a farm (a business) and a hobby.
Most homesteaders...myself included go into homesteading with no plan.
No idea of what they want. No idea of how to make it work.
And for sure no plan on how to pay for it all!
Working a full time job and homesteading is exhausting And the reality is becoming a youtube star is about as likely as becoming an NBA star. (it could happen but let's be more honest upfront)
Let's treat the homestead like a business.
Make a plan for what you want it to look like.
What products will you have?
How will you market them?
What about your infrastructure? Do you have plans for water, fences, barns? Where will they go and what will they look like.
Then the big one that we really can't let go of. Where is your community?
If you don't have one how will you make one or find one? (no homestead is an island!)
There's a lot more to the holistic planning of your homestead. BUT I wanted to give you some ideas to ponder.
What we want is for this to work for you! With what's going on in the world you need this work!
We need all the homesteaders we can get!
If this is something you'd like to learn more about. Let me know!
Not sure where to start with homesteading?
